Look for another explanation
"What else could explain this?"
Modern take · Chamberlin, T. C. (1890)
When a claim offers one cause, ask what other causes would produce the same result. If there are several, the claim hasn't won yet.
From the scientific method: T. C. Chamberlin's 'method of multiple working hypotheses' (1890) says to keep several explanations in play so you don't fall for your first one. Cognitive therapy uses the same question ('Is there another way to see this?') as part of Socratic questioning (Padesky 1993). It fits Socrates' spirit because it refuses to let the first answer stand unexamined, but it isn't a move Plato records.
