Test your critical thinking

Your goal: the CritThinker Certificate

Work through each skill from Foundation to Advanced, pass a short Mastery Test in each, then take the Certificate Test. The pass mark is 80%. There's no deadline and no ranking against anyone else.

Multiple choice, one skill at a time or all of them. Explanations appear after each answer. Nothing is sent off this device.

What it measures

The test uses nine skills, the same nine named in the focus menu. Logical fallacies: whether a step matches a named mistake, such as a straw man or a false dilemma, rather than a conclusion you dislike. Cognitive biases: whether a judgement is being tugged by a habit the library files, such as confirmation, availability, anchoring, or framing. Evaluating arguments: whether the reasons offered actually support the conclusion. Identifying assumptions: the claim the step needs and does not state. Fact versus opinion: which part could be checked, and which part is a verdict, without pretending that every opinion is empty. Interpreting an argument: what this passage is doing, not what a louder slogan near it usually means. Applying a principle: using a rule the question gives you on a new case, including when the result is inconvenient. Numbers and chance: percentages, risk, samples, averages and charts. Evidence and sources: studies, headlines, experts, photos and quotations, and how to weigh them.

You can sit all nine or one of them. Difficulty is mixed, or foundation, intermediate, or advanced. The questions are the bank this site already uses.

How long it takes

Length is 10, 20, or 30 questions. Timing is untimed, 45 seconds each, or 25 seconds each. Untimed is the ordinary way to learn, because the explanation after each answer is the point of the sitting. A clock, when you choose one, is per question. It does not add a second, overall limit. If the skill you picked has fewer questions than the length, the next screen says so and the test uses all of them. This practice test has no pass mark. Mastery Tests and the Certificate Test pass at 80%. This page will not invent a percentage that “most people” reach.

Free, with no account

The test costs nothing and does not ask you to sign in. The question bank is fetched when you press Start, not with this page. Your score, the review of each answer, and the daily streak are stored in this browser. Clearing the site’s data clears them. A higher number means more of these questions right, at the difficulty and length you picked. It is not a qualification, and it is not a comparison with other people, because other people’s scores are not here.

After a sitting you can read each question with your answer, the correct answer, and the explanation, then retry the ones you missed. That review is the same local record. The streak on the home page is a habit around the short daily three, not a grade for this longer test.

FAQ

What does a score mean?

It is how many of the questions in that sitting you got right. The results page shows your answer, the correct answer, and the explanation. It does not turn the count into a pass, a grade, or a rank against anyone else.

Can I redo the ones I missed?

Yes. The results page can retry the wrong ones from that sitting. The review stays on this device, with the rest of the scores.

Does the timer change the marking?

No. If you choose 45 or 25 seconds, a question that runs out is unanswered. The explanation still appears. Speed does not add points.

What are levels, Mastery Tests, and the Certificate?

Each of the nine skills starts at Foundation. Intermediate unlocks after you have tried at least eight different Foundation questions in that skill (or all of them if there are fewer), with 75% or better on first attempts. Advanced unlocks the same way. A Mastery Test is ten questions in one skill once Advanced is open. The Certificate Test is 27 questions, three from each skill, once every skill is mastered. The pass mark for both is 80%. There is no deadline and no ranking against anyone else. The test on this page still lets you choose any difficulty.
