The obstacle

Marcus tells himself that what blocks an action can become the material of the action. The line is easy to turn into a slogan for pushing on after the evidence has changed. Read it more narrowly. An obstacle shows you which virtue or which next step is actually available. It does not cancel a plan that has already failed in the same way twice. The card is a paraphrase of the Greek notes he wrote to himself, not a published book.

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”
